Support with Interpreting, Translating and Communication

SWITC (Support with Interpreting, Translating and Communication) is a program funded by the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services to address the communication needs of people from a non-English speaking background.

Non-government organisations (NGO's) funded by the Disability Services portfolio of this department can use SWITC to make their services accessible to people who use a language other than English through the use of translators and interpreters.

Administered by Deaf Services Queensland, SWITC attends to a growing need to provide free interpreting and translation services to funded NGO’s across Queensland.

The SWITC program offers support to people who are:
• Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders
• From a culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) background, including Australian South Sea Islanders
• Deaf or hearing impaired people who use sign language as their primary mode of communication
• Blind or visually impaired people who use Braille for written communication.

Deaf Services Queensland has serviced nearly 3000 interpreting assignments and over 140 translations since the launch of SWITC in 2009. All assignments create positive outcomes for people from more than 40 different spoken languages and provides them with access a range of important support services.

SWITC has an online booking system for all interpreting and translation requests. To make a booking, please visit http://bookings.switc.org.au.
